Directory NTFS Permissions

Disk Triage has the ability to gather and report on the NTFS Persmissions (and Netware Rights) that are assigned to each directory and file.  It reports them in the Windows 2K format - not the older NT Style.  The screen shot below shows what the basic screen looks like.  It is accessed either from the popup menu of the Treeview or by hitting F9.  A complete description of the columns and what they mean is available in the help file.

As you move from directory to directory in the Tree the Permissions window is updated to show the permissions for that new directory at the same time.

However, one of the most powerful parts of the NTFS Permissions feature is the reporting capabilities.  The report options screen shown below - has a check box "Show Only Differences".  When this check box is selected the report will only show the directories (and files if requested) that have permissions that are different from the currently selected directory in the Treeview!

In most cases LAN Administrators set permissions at a higher level directory structure and then propagate them down through the tree.  This works well until someone changes permissions in a subdirectory or file - and all of a sudden people in that work group can no longer access certain files.  Usually solving this requires a lot of digging in each directory to see where the permissions have been changed.

However, with Disk Triage - you simply select the directory you want to use as the master in the Treeview - then choose to print the Permissions report and make sure you have only differences checked - and the resulting report will show you only the directory you selected and any sub-directories under it that have different permissions!!   NO other Utility offers this capability!

Note:  In the report shot below - out of the 100+ sub-directories below the Docs directory - only two have different permissions set on them!
