When you click the Export button the selected files will be exported out to a Column Delimited text file. This column delimited file can then be easily imported in to other programs such as Excel, Access, etc. It is also in a fairly readable format.
When the export is taking place - a simple progress bar will show the progress
When the export is complete - it will tell you how many records have been exported to the text file.
