Active Backup is not your traditional backup program. It does not simply write out to CD/DVD, tape or disk. It is more like a versioning and document management tool in combination with a backup program. It automatically backs up and versions your files as you save them - no matter what program you use to change them. It does not wait for you tell it to do it - so your backup/archive is always up to date!

How it works
Basically when you install Active Backup you tell it where you want to keep your Archive (or backup) - and what folders/files you want to monitor. At that point it will archive the files to create a base version. This 'Archive' is compressed - so it takes up only a fraction of the size of the original file.
After this setup - every time you change the file - your changes are automatically backed up to the compressed archive. You don't have to do a thing - the program handles it for you automatically!
Runs in the System Tray
The program run in the system tray and had three states
- Offline - the program is not monitoring for changes
- Online - the program is monitoring the requested directories
for changes
- Active - the program is currently adding files to the archive
Integration Right into Windows Explorer
AJC Active Backup integrates right into the Popup menu in Windows Explorer, giving you an easy way to deal with the archive - including restoring files to previous version, reviewing changes, comparing versions, etc.
The Archive
Once you have AJC Active Backup setup and running on your system - it is something that is very easy to forget is there - until you need it. It runs quietly in the background - but always there if you need to recover from a problem.
The screen shot to the left (click to enlarge) shows one of our source files that we have changed 19 times in a short period of time. Active Backup and recorded the changes for each version. You can see that even after 19 versions, the archive is still only a fraction of the size of the original file.
As well this screen gives you full control over your archive with the ability to view different versions, remove old versions to keep your archive small, etc

Complete Version Differencing Tool
AJC Active Backup provides a complete version differencing tool. The image to the right shows some of the changes made to one of the source files in our Disk Triage program. Note that it easily shows new lines, changed lines and exactly what has been changed.
